Academic Master Degree Program in Environmental Engineering

Education Goals

General: To meet the demand of state and local environmental protection and front international academic, the graduates should have strong social responsibility and innovative ability, engaging in scientific research work in the field ofenvironment and taking on environmental technology and management research, innovative high-level environmental engineering talents.

Specific Requirements

1. Master the basic theory of environmental engineering, technology and research methods, get acknowledge of environmental engineering developing tendency at home and abroad, get the ability of engaging in scientific research, teaching and engaging in the work of the environmental technology and management expertise independently.

2. To be able to use the first foreign language for international communication, and be able to read foreign literature and write research papers in foreign language.

3. Get further the knowledge structure and academic ability in reclaimed water using, waste water treatment and resource recovery.

Length of Schooling

The normal length of schooling for master students is three years. If the master students cannot be finished the education task, who will be required to delay one’s graduation, but the time no more than five years. Implementing credit system, total credits should not be less than 32 credits, containing no less than 9 credits in subject basic courses, containing no less than 8 credits in major courses, containing no less than 8 credits in developing course.

Allow students to graduate early, but the minimum study years shall not be less than 2.5 years, pre-graduation conditions: during the course of study, publish 2 papers which are cited by SCI or 1 paper of which the impact factor is more than the average.

Teaching Mode

1. In the process of postgraduate training, course study, thesis work and practice work should be arranged reasonably.

1.1 Course study focuses on training the postgraduate student's independent learning ability and research ability. Master could arrange study time reasonably according to their study plan, completing all credits prior to application for dissertation.

1.2 Master's thesis work focuses on the systematic and comprehensive research training, cultivating the master to use knowledge in finding, analyzing and solving problems comprehensively.

1.3 Practice education focuses on cultivating the students' scientific literacy and hands-on ability, taking diverse forms of practice education, in the whole process of postgraduate students training.

2. Adopt the combination of personal guidance and collective training modes. Using supervisors’ subjective initiative and public wisdom to broad the academic horizon of the postgraduate. Guide and promote the independent and personalized development of postgraduate students.

3.One who apply for the academic degree must publish at least one paper related with dissertation content as the first author in domestic and international academic journals (core journals) during the period of studying (1) (published or formal offer), can apply for degree. 2.Personal learning plan

Postgraduates set personal study and research plan under the guidance of tuoter.

Personal study and research plan should be completed within three months after admission, and school archive it after checking by mentor.

3.Teaching method and examination way

Integrate teaching, research and practice of teaching methods, give full play to the discussion and practice teaching in promoting students' autonomous learning and inquiry learning.

The main basic course, professional disciplines, professional direction class course must pass the examination, passed before the credits. Evaluation methods including open book/request for examination, book reports, lab reports, investigation reports, papers, and other forms.

Degree Thesis

Dissertation work focuses on guiding students to use scientific methods to solve practical problems, including literature review, opening report review and progress reports, papers and thesis defense, etc.

1.Opening report and checking

Opening report generally performs in the beginning of the first semester in the second year (the third semester) (at the end of October to early November). Post graduate students need to actively submit the opening report to their personal tutors to editing.

Opening report should be performed in a unified way. All postgraduate students of the department and tutors who has guiding qualification for master must attend all along.

The basic requirement of the opening report follows the school rules, the time of report is no more than 15 minutes. All the tutors give the marks. Determine students pass the opening report or not by the average. The students who does not pass the opening report should re-open the report within the limit time (in the middle of December). The remark criteria for opening report of postgraduate is according to the rules for postgraduates management of Environmental school of Northeast Normal University.

2. Medium-term checking

At the end of the term of the second year (the end of the forth term) medium-term would be performed. The college conduct the examination and supervision of the graduate student's project with the teacher group (not less than 3 persons).

Postgraduates report the task by PPT, reporting time is no more than 10 minutes. Main contents include: an overview, the completed research content, methods and completed proportion; achievements and innovations; problems which would be solved and solutions; the next step plan.

The review teachers give the remark. The remark criteria for medium-term checking of postgraduate is according to the rules for postgraduates management of Environmental school of Northeast Normal University.

3. Graduation thesis defense

According to the rules of schood, postgraduates should perform thesis defense in the last term of the third year. Postgraduates should perform pre-defense in the tutor group (no less than 3 people). Apply for the formal defense after passing the pre-defense., The academic degree evaluation committee and the professor committee check and supervise. The defense and degree application is according to degree application and implementation rules of postgraduate dissertation of Northeast Normal University. Complete dissertation work, and pass through the dissertation could get 6 credits.

Literature Review

The first-year postgraduates should read more than 30 literatures linking with personal research fields. More than half should be in foregin language and postgraduates should write the reading reports. Teachers review and give comments. Meanwhile, postgraduates should give the presentation in the school.

Suggestions for Outline of literature review to the first year postgraduate:

The research background and significance ( importance, scientific value and application prospect);Research status at home and abroad (the basic concept and principle, research status review and summarize the literature about the description of the problem and solution); References (note the amount of references, the proportion of literatures in English and Chinese, the proportion of the published literatures in nearly three years, the proportion of SCI)

Practical Activity

Pay more attention to the effect of practical education in postgraduate training. According to the characteristics of the professional disciplines and the talent training type, arrange practical education activity reasonably, makes every effort to practice education through in-class and after-class education activities. At the same time, it is important to pay special attention to the education function of classroom teaching, in the classroom teaching teachers should guide students to learn to deal with complex problems through more practical issues, improving the ability of solving practical problems.

Postgraduates must give one academic report in school within the study duration. Academic report is one of the condition for graduation.

Encourage graduate students to participate actively in academic conferences at home and abroad and make posters or conference reports. The college invites prominent experts from home and abroad regularly to communicate to expand students' academic vision and enhance the research level.

This training plan is put into practice from 2017 master postgraduate students.
